DPHILL SPANGLISHMAN ON TAGSTERSMUZIC

17 November 2011, by Midget Ferrara

I don’t know who came up with this stupid plan to write about Music on Tagsters Alex. I was sitting here, being depressed about having no work and the economical crisis. It wasn’t a blast, but I like things not to blast, cause if they don’t blast, I’m not blasting them and that’s a big up in my case. When we’re talking music though, I can’t remain silent and sit back. So I did some research, found the newest musical sensation and therefore I make a shaky start to this new format on Tagsters called: Music… Alex…

And this sensation issssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss: rapper DPhill Spanglishman, a.k.a. D Phillgood. Wut wut!?! Back in the days there were already so many themes in hiphop. Gravediggaz with horrorcore and later cloned as Spooks after they dismembered the whole Graveyardcrew. Public Enemy as a small Black Powerarmy and Parish who showed how to make it even harder.  Stetsasonic with their funky clothing, while nowadays every rapper is dressed up, except for me, the reallyreal.

Spanglishman shows his feminime side. He wears lipstick, a legging, sunglasses and a moustache. I don’t think he’s a foxy lady. But I do think he’s funny. He does the impossible in the rapscene, where the hate of homos is almost as intense as it is in the most annoying and deranged of all churches, Westboro Baptist Church that is. Everybody wants to know if it’s a gimmick, but I think it’s more important what it means for the subculture of hiphop when somebody has the idea that a gimmick like that works.

I’ve been observing the patterns in the rapscene for years now. When a fifteen year old kid writes his first lyrics, you know the subject will be rape and pedophealia, because those are the most shocking subjects and therefore probably the most scoring. It doesn’t work though, partly because every rookiekid before him tried, but also because it’s more shocking to a hiphopper when a man dresses like a girl. Unless it’s functional and obviously a joke, like Eminem in some of his videos.

I don’t think I have to prove that the hiphopscene is a hypocritical tuberculosisthing Alex. It was here long before you were and it will be here in the future. Gimmicks are commonly used, Luckily not all gimmicks are a succes. In Holland, rapper Dicecream tried to form a pact with other rappers, stating they are the outcasts of society. But Dicecream went to school, was educated well and accepted by all his higher society classmates, simply because he came from a societyfamily as well. I would have hated for him to be succesfull with taking the underdogposition.

It’s about the music Alex. The sound is the essence. Most important are the rap skills of DPhill Spanglishman. I just listened a couple of tracks and I think he sings as well as Rick Astley. But this guy can’t rap. It sounds like crap and should be considered to be moved to the category of popmusic when they’re handing out the awards. I don’t know if it’s an expression in English, but in Dutch we call this a travesty.

Finally, I like to answer the question whether we need to provoke the hiphopscene or not. I think we do, there were already rappers who tried to do so in lyrics as well as interviews, but this time the impact is way bigger. If hiphop ever wants to become REAL, instead of a dress up party for posers, there need to be much more of these provocations. It’s payback time, ridicule the ridiculous!

Here’s Sage doing his part:
